Coil-on-Plug but oh shit, we’re over budget. “Just half-ass it so we stay under”.
The 90's Ford way
.
Guess they got the italian backwards at Alfa-Romeo when the Twin Spark engines were born...

It’s just a waste-spark setup. I don’t see the issue.

But everyone used wasted spark ignition. GM, Chrysler, Mazda, Toyota.

as long as it runs

minor detail

Did they do Coil on Plug for half, wires to the rest? The other engines were 1 coilpack with wires to all 4 plugs per usual

Waste spark system. Nothing wrong with it, and quite common for the period.

Still not as bad as Chevy’s single injector electronic fuel injection. I still remember the first time I saw that on my buddy’s Cavalier and how dumbfounded I was that a car manufacturer would do that.

Have you not heard of throttle body injection?

For Toyotas, I think the 5VZ-FE did. I’m pretty sure some of the 5E-FEs did as well.

Not before I saw it on that car. Apparently I lived a sheltered life away from the horrors of TBI until that moment. The scariest fuel injection system I’d dealt with until then was L-Jetronic, which isn’t really that bad at all.

Bosch did it, too - Monomotronic. We didn’t get it in the US, but Canada got it on a base model 1.8 liter Mk3 Golf.
And, K-Jetronic can get scary fast if someone fucked with the fuel distributor.

Isn’t that every car though?

Some quicker than others luckily!

5VZ seems to be that way correct, 5E-FE’s are the normal coils besides engine, plug wires to plugs.

I don’t think I’ve seen one in a North American Tercel. I’m not sure which markets they came in.
